First and best film version of Thomas Harris' book RED DRAGON, the first appearance of Hannibal Lecter. (The second filming, RED DRAGON is a bit more faithful to the book but an inferior movie.)Michael Mann is an under-rated guy because MIAMI VICE was so popular that people sometimes think of him as a TV guy. Ironic, because nobody uses wide-screen more aggressively than Mann. He's as distinctive a stylist as Ridley Scott.
Personal note: I first watched this movie on home video in the 1980s on a bright sunlit afternoon, and it scared me for days! I couldn't shake this character named Hannibal Lecter from my mind. For a long time I couldn't listen to "Ina-gadda-da-vida" without the hair on my arms standing up.
"FBI Agent Will Graham (William Petersen) has captured the diabolical Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Brian Cox), nearly losing more than just his mind in the process. But when Graham is called out of retirement to hunt the psychopath known as "The Tooth Fairy" (Tom Noonan, in a role Entertainment Weekly calls "one of the freakiest madmen Hollywood has ever given us") he must once again confront the horrors of "Hannibal The Cannibal". If Will Graham enters the mind of the serial killer, can he ever come back? Joan Allen (THE CONTENDER), Dennis Farina, Kim Greist and Stephen Lang co-star in this shocking thriller directed by Michael Mann and adapted from the novel RED DRAGON by Thomas Harris. But be warned: Fans and critics alike consider MANHUNTER to be far superior to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS...as well as one of the most unnerving serial killer movies ever made."
Wide Screen. Dolby Digital THX-enhanced transfer of the film, plus talent bios and two featurettes, "The Manhunter Look: A Conversation with cinematographer Dante Spinotti" and "Inside Manhunter," with cast members William Petersen, Joan Allen, Brian Cox, and Tom Noonan.
