| | Highly recommended! A great film, IMO, andthe apogee of crime exploitation films. Sleazy, creepy and eerily realistic luminous B&W film based upon the true story of American serial killers pretty-boy Raymond Fernandez (Tony Lo Bianco) and overweight nurse Martha Beck (Shirley Stoler) who went on a spree of murder and mayhem in the late 1940s. Posing as brother and sister, the pair befriends and ultimately murders lonely women for their savings. This chilling movie is a cult classic and features fine performances from the two leads in the roles of the real life “lonely hearts killers” For all of its stark "true detective" sleaziness THE HONEYMOON KILLERS is as much black comedy as crime thriller and would make a fine double bill with Martin Scorsese's KING OF COMEDY; ironic, since this movie was originally to have been directed by Martin Scorsese, who was replaced by Leonard Kastle. |
