Effervescent teen comedy update of Jane Austen's 1816 matchmaking comedy EMMA set in a Beverly Hills high school. One of those magical productions that succeeds at everything. The cast is great. The soundtrack is superb. Almost every joke works. Almost every emotional moment is affecting. It's not RULES OF THE GAME, but it's a truly *great* teen comedy. The original title was "I Was a Teenage Teenager."

The story, familiar to anyone who's seen the Gwyneth Paltrow EMMA, is that a popular and charming but self-centered rich girl (Alicia Silverstone) sets to fixing the problems of everyone around her with disastrous results, not realizing that she doesn't even know her own mind. Director Amy Heckerling is preternaturally uneven. She came on the scene with the delightful FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMEONT HIGH, then set to making the worst movies ever burned into film… JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY, LOOK WHO'S TALKING, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S EURPOEAN VACATION (a shockingly unfunny entrant in an otherwise funny series), and LOOK WHO'S TALKING TOO. Then she somehow made CLUELESS. She followed that with LOSER, a teen comedy that's limp but not a total disaster. So her career has been that her high-school comedies are wonderful but when she's not making a high-school comedy she's about the worst director that's ever lived.

Brittany Murphy almost steals the show in her breakthrough role as Tai Fraiser, the poor chubby ugly duckling Silverstone makes-over. (Toni Collette in the Paltrow version of EMMA) Starring Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, Dan Hedaya and Julie Brown.
